Mixed Method Research

Course Overview

A focused workshop that deepens understanding of mixed-methods research design—from philosophical underpinnings to practical implementation. Learn how to craft robust, integrative studies that combine the strengths of qualitative and quantitative approaches for richer insights.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Articulate philosophical foundations of mixed-methods (e.g., pragmatism, constructivism) and their historical context
  • Classify and choose appropriate mixed-methods designs (e.g., convergent parallel, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential)
  • Identify research questions that are best addressed through integrated qualitative and quantitative strategies
  • Design a mixed-methods study—from sampling to data collection—that aligns with chosen design
  • Plan effective integration methods (e.g., joint displays, meta-inferences) to merge qualitative and quantitative findings
  • Anticipate and address validity threats in mixed-methods (e.g., internal/external validity, integration threats)
  • Data Analysis using MAXQDA

Tools & Resources

MAXQDA, Concept-mapping software for design visualization, data integration templates, AI-enhanced joint-display tools, and examples of scholarly mixed-methods studies.
